In the rebranding of Central Milton Keynes, English Partnerships and the Council promoted the site C4.1, within the Sustainable Residential Quarter, as part of the redefinition of the ‘grid’ for the town centre.
Macfarlane Wilder were commissioned to create a public realm concept and masterplan for the new high density retail and residential site in Milton Keynes.
The design encompasses a contemporary layout for the residential courtyard including lines of trees on sculpted mounds to subdivide the space and light beacons as curious elements of public art. The design features a dry water course which allows rainwater to be channeled through the site, over cascades and into a collection pond. The dynamic public realm design provides a strong sense of place for the new residents and visitors to the site known as C4.1. The ability for the successful public realm to deliver a new living and working destination that has a popular sense of place will be the acid test.
