Public realm masterplan for a substantial mixed use development occupying the north west quadrant of the city centre. The masterplan includes an extensive new Northgate shopping area of 450,000sqft, 110 apartments, a performing arts centre, bus station, library and refurbished market. The scheme has the ambitious goal of integrating new shopping streets and squares into the historic context of the town centre. The Northgate site concept follows the town centre strategies covering public realm, public art, lighting and retail circuits. From this, the new streets and squares will reconnect parts of the historic city and enhance the urban fabric. New squares such as the Theatre Square, set in the heart of the development, create an opportunity to provide a focus for arts and entertainment within the historic town centre, whilst new proposals for the reconstruction of the civic heart, Town Hall Square, are currently underway.
