Macfarlane Wilder were commissioned by ING Real Estate and William Ewart properties alongside Chapman Taylor Architects to respond to the existing redevelopment brief for Cathedral Quarter, Belfast. The Chapman Taylor/MW team produced a comprehensive submission on behalf of ING including a concept masterplan to deliver a successful public realm.
The masterplan creates a legible network of vibrant streets and squares ‘stitching’ the existing historic urban grain and enhance the unique character of this quarter of the city.
The creation of three new squares would be complemented by the inception of an interpretation and public art strategy to compliment existing strategies and promote the cultural and historic significance of this part of Belfast city. The new public realm for the north east quarter would be distinctive within the city and would significantly contribute to the image of Belfast as a retail, commercial, leisure and cultural European destination.
